Warm Up today is a review of mutualism, parasitism and commenslism. Next, we went over our homework in groups to make sure we had all of the correct answers. In this unit we have to cover two different cycle (Nitrogen and Carbon cycle). We will cover the carbon cycle today on 63 in our notebooks. Next we added notes on the nitrogen cycle cycle on page 64. These two cycle are ways we see energy running through an ecosystem. As a review of ecosystem, and organisms role in the ecosystem, we viewed a short video on the Vultures in India. Vultures fill a critical niche in India as scavengers, so when they began dying out due to an unknown toxin, wild dogs filled that role in their urban food web. Vultures feed on the carcasses of cattle which, in India, are left in carrion dumps and not eaten. After a medical agent used in cattle was found to be poisoning the vulture population, wild dogs and rats quickly filled the niche the birds vacated; however these new scavengers meant big trouble for the human population of India. Next we took notes on Energy Pyramids. You can find the notes here. Lastly---we reviewed a little for our unit test which will be February 12th and 13th . Our review was the scavenger hunt. Energy/Ecosystems/Evolution TEST will be Monday February 12th and Tuesday February 13th. It will be multiple choice and on school net.

Warm up today is on Limiting Factors. Read this article on limiting factors. www.nhptv.org/natureworks/nwep12a.htm Next, we added notes on page 61 of our notebooks on Ecosystems. Finally, using a blendspace we added a bunch of information to page 62 in our notebooks. We covered everything from producers and consumers to food chains and energy pyramids. The first slide of the blendspace has the assignment listed, but I am attaching the assignment here too. The parts that are unchecked are what you have to do, the parts checked off with the green check marks are what needs to be put in your notebook. Here is the link to the blendspace. https://www.tes.com/lessons/QP8_RlcKTyoJ5A/ecosystems The check marks the items you have to WRITE down something in your notebook. The unchecked ones are videos/games/quizzes you have to do online. HOMEWORK TODAY-
FYI Unit test for Evolution, Energy and Ecosystems will be Monday February 12th and Tuesday February 13th. We will also have notebook check this day too. That means 2 big formal grades!!
Warm Up today was a review of the three different types of symbiosis (mutualism, commensalism, and parasitism). We watched a few minutes watching the video "Trials of Life: Living Together" to show some real life examples of symbiosis. Next we took a few notes on ecosystems on page 61 in your notebooks. If you were not here, here are the notes for page 61. Next the students created a predator-prey graph showing the relationship among the numbers of predators vs. the number of prey. Students were given the data and graph paper in class. Here is the handout we used in class, you can use your own graph paper if you were not in class, or come by and get graph paper from me. You can find some information about the relationship between the hare and the lynx here. http://blogs.britannica.com/2011/06/rise-fall-canada-lynx-snowshoe-hare/
Homework -
Your graph should resemble the one below (2 lines, one for each animal) We will be having Mrs. Dunton Forbes visit our class today for the first 45 minutes. She will be covering high school, what courses you should be taking, GPA, and Honors/AP classes Make sure you check out the School Couneling website frequently for up to date info on highschool. http://swmscounselingdepartment.weebly.com/8th-grade-newshighlights.html We finished the block with your quiz on natural selection and evolution. Grades will be updated ASAP. Reminder - You have a CANVAS assignment due on February 5th, 2018. I will go over it in class today, please make sure you are checking CANVAS.
CANVAS BIOLOGICAL EVOLUTION ASSIGNMENT: Choose any three pieces of evidence. Describe in detail each piece of evidence. In that same paragraph explain how this example shows/proves/supports evolution. Your assignment should only be 3 paragraphs, one for each example you are writing about. Please start the first paragraph with a short explanation of what is Biological Evolution before leading into the 3 examples you are choosing to write about. North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics Summer Program in Durham, NC Application just opened up. Due March 5th.
No warm up folders today, or computers. Instead we are doing a reading assignment on genetic variation. In class you received an article called, "Genetic Variation Helps Rescue Endangered Panthers". You are to annotate the article as if you were in Language Arts. There are also 5 questions on the article that will be answered on a separate sheet of paper. Most of you turned in this assignment. If you did not turn it in, make sure you give it to me next class. If you were absent, please stop by my room and pick up the article. 1.Describe genetic variation. 2.What are the short term and long term impacts of low genetic variation on a population. Create a T chart to show this evidence. 3.Paragraph 1 and paragraph 4 use the phrase “new blood”. Explain the meaning of “new blood” and the effect of new blood on the Panther population. 4.Using evidence from the text, explain why genetic variation is important for species survival. 5.This article was written over 6 years ago (December 2010). Do you still think this article is important? Explain your response. Next, we started to transition to the Ecosystem part of our unit. Symbiosis is the study of the way organisms live together, If you were absent, here are the notes for page 60. Next we watched portions of a Trial of Life video seeing different examples of commmensalism, mutualism, and parasitism. We will continue with this relationships next class.
