You should have gotten your packet on Thursday or Friday of this week. I know it looks like a lot but it really is not. Here are a few reminders to ease your mind.
NOTEBOOK CHECK and TEST on MONDAY (B DAY) and TUESDAY(A DAY). These two grades will be our first formal grades of 4th quarter!!! Study and be prepared.

Another article today on hand sanitizers to add to our list on page 79. You should be coming up with an opinion for and against hand sanitizers by now. Today's article was titled, "Hidden Dangers of Hand Sanitizers". Next, we completed the pathogen handout around the room. If you were not here today, here are the handouts to help you fill in the chart. This is the assignment we started last class.
Microbes and Diseases - (Homework) I suggest using the websites: www.Mayoclinic.com and www.cdc.gov, but you can use any other site too. You are looking for the pathogen (bacteria, virus, protist, fungi), the symptoms of the disease, the treatment and if there is a vector carrying it. A vector is any animal that carrries the disease but doesn't get infected. (For example: Mosquitoes are vectors for malaria)
1. Finish your pathogens handout that we started last class. Here are the handouts I have hung around the room
2. Epidemics in America: : Click on this link to get to the infograph. Use the information from the infograph to fill in the chart on the major epidemics in the United States. 3. Microbes and diseases. Use these websites as a starting point.

The article titled "Hand Sanitizers: Does the Good Outweigh the Bad?" In our notebook the students wrote down the benefits and consequences of using hand sanitizers on page 79. We are going to be keeping a running log of all the evidence that supports the use of hand sanitizers and all the evidence that supports not using hand sanitizers. Next, we went over the Infectious Vocabulary from last class. If you were not here to review, here is the review of the vocabulary. These words go on page 78 in our notebooks. We also got up and moved around the room to see the transmission of a disease through a population. Lastly, we completed a chart filling in information on different pathogens (page 80 in your notebook). If you were not here here is the information we used in class to fill in the chart.
I don't know much about this camp, but it sounds like a great opportunity.

We took a quick mini quiz on cells, these grades will be in the gradebook as soon as I can get them in.
Warm up - look at the three websites below, make a chart in our warm up showing the benefits and harmful effects of organisms from the Kingdom Protista. http://www.ck12.org/book/CK-12-Life-Science-Concepts-For-Middle-School/section/6.6/ https://www.biologycorner.com/bio1/parasitic-protists.html http://www.ck12.org/biology/Protists-and-Human-Disease/lesson/Protists-and-Human-Disease-BIO/?referrer=concept_details Next we finished up our protists assignment on page 74 and 75. if you do not finish page 74 today in class, please finish it up for homework. https://www.tes.com/lessons/WEfZ94Tmi2bZVQ/protists We spent some time in class going over the different protists and their important characteristics. Lastly we created a group posters in support of our Protists. A group representing Protists are protesting the lack of credit given by North Carolina Zoo to Protists. The NC Zoo Board is taking this protest seriously, but since Protists are not recognized as plants or animals, the Board is questioning if they are alive. Create a poster convincing the board that Protists are alive and explain why they should not be in the plants and animal kingdom, and also explain why they should have an exhibition for Protists at the zoo.
Our warm up is a review of cellular respiration and photosynthesis, if you were absent last class, please make sure you get a copy of the notes from me or a peer.
Use the following websites to finish filling in the information on each of the Kingdoms. Make sure you you identfiy the following characteristics for each Kingdom.
http://www.factmonster.com/science/biology/six-kingdoms.html http://www.veritasprep.com/the-six-kingdoms-by-veritas-prep/ http://www.ric.edu/faculty/ptiskus/six_kingdoms/ A Day and B Day - we both went over the notes on Kingdoms on page 73. We are reviewing the Kingdoms because as we move into infectious diseases many of the infectious diseases are caused by Protists, Fungi and Bacteria. Today, you have a number of things to do with Protists. All of the information you need is on the blendspace.
As you are working, I'll will be calling you up to the microscopes to look at the slides of EUGLENA, VOLVOX, PARAMECIUM and AMOEBA.
Warm up today was the Cell Rap. The rap went over the different organelles. Next we took a look at Elodea plants under the microscope. Elodea plants are fresh water plants that have super thin leaves. Since the leaves are so thin, we actually see the chloroplasts. We made two slides, one with fresh water and one with salt water to see the difference between how the chloroplasts react differently. While we were letting the cells react with the salt and fresh water, we created a flip book of cellular respiration and photosynthesis. The flip book will go on the back of page 72. Finally we finished up with some information on Kingdoms using the following sites. Title page 73 KINGDOMS and divide the page into 6 sections.
The first thing I want you to do is watch the Brainpop on the SIX KINGDOMS. As you are watching, take notes on each of the kingdoms on page 72 in your notebook. www.brainpop.com/science/diversityoflife/sixkingdoms/ Use the following websites to finish filling in the information on each of the Kingdoms. Make sure you you identfiy the following characteristics for each Kingdom.
