Our warm up today shows an example of an adaptation that made the news this month. Please read the article and watch the video on the alligators in North and South Carolina. Next, we did an around the room activity going through 9 stations on evolution. These stations reviewed Geological Evolution (Pangaea, continental drift) and Biological Evolution(natural selection, genetic variation). Below you can find all of the stations and the questions if you were absent. The answers go on page 59.
Just a heads up----and I will explain next class I placed the following assignment in Canvas on Biological Evolution. We have been covering Biological Evolution for the last couple of weeks and we have covered quite of few pieces of evidence that help support and explain evolution. Choose 3 any three pieces of evidence. Describe in detail that piece of evidence. You can use anything we talked about in class. If you are talking about the bird beak lab, describe the lab. If you are talking about vestigial organs, describe and give examples of vestigial organs. In that same paragraph explain how this example shows/proves/supports evolution. Your assignment should only be 3 paragraphs, one for each example you are choosing to write about. Please start the first paragraph with a short explanation of what is Biological Evolution before leading into the 3 examples you are choosing to write about. FYI - Evolution and Natural Selection Quiz Monday January 29th and Tuesday January 30th, 2018 First formal grade of 3rd Quarter!!! Read the following and complete it in your warm up folder. For our warm up today we also reviewed genetics and then we went over the homework. On page 57 in our notebook we added notes on Homologous and Analogous structures, another piece of evidence that supports evolution. If you were not here, here are the notes. For our last assignment today we took at look at different adaptations for plants and animals using stations. Station 1 was vocabulary. You can use www.vocabulary.com for the definitions, make sure you look for the scientific definition. Stations 2 and 3 are handouts that you can pick up from the back of the room. I also attached the handouts below. Station 4 Read the article on adaptations Below are the links for Station 5: http://www.nhptv.org/natureworks/nwep1.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm Station 2: structural_adaptations2016.pdf Download File Station 3: behavioral_adaptation2016.pdf Download File FYI - Evolution and Natural Selection Quiz will be Tuesday January 23rd and Wednesday January 24th, 2018 First formal grade of 3rd Quarter!!! Thank you all for being so patient with the messed up schedule the last two days.
I appreciate you all. Our warm up today was a follow up to the lab we did last class with the bird beaks. we graphed the results and completed the conclusion. If you did not finish the conclusion, here are the questions. 1. According to your results, out of all the beaks, which species has nature selected for? Which species has nature has selected against? 2. According to your results, which “worm” is nature selecting for? What species has nature selected against? 3. If we looked at this population of birds and worms in the next 5 years, how do you think the population will change? 4. How does this activity demonstrate the concept of natural selection? Next, we did a quick review of genetics. The Genetics 101 notes will go on page 55 in your notebooks. Here are the notes if you were absent. This should all be a review from 7th grade. Finally, we completed an activity simulating natural selection using the Peppered Moths and Industrial Revolution. The website for this activity can be found here. Students clicked through the website and answered questions on the Peppered Moths on page 56 in their notebooks. Here is the handout from the Peppered Moth activity. peppered_moth_simulation.docx Download File HOMEWORK - If you did not finish the peppered moth activity and the genetics handout, finish them for homework. Quiz next week on Natural selection and evolution. January 23rd and January 24th, 2018
Our warm up today was a review of natural selection and adaptation. Next we went over the natural selection homework and completed the notes we started last class on page 53. If you were not here, here are the notes. Next we completed a bird beak lab. Using 4 different types of beaks and 4 different food sources we competed for food. Some of you made adaptations with your beak by flipping it around, some of you died out because you couldn't pick up any food. After completing the lab, we graphed the results and completed the conclusion. Finally, we completed an activity simulating natural selection using the Peppered Moths and Industrial Revolution. The website for this activity can be found here. Students clicked through the website and answered questions on the Peppered Moths on page 55 in their notebooks. Here is the handout from the Peppered Moth activity. Finish this up for homework, if we don't finish in class.
peppered_moth_simulation.docx Download File Warm Up - Read this article on Vestigial Organs and answer the questions from board in your warm up folder.
Last class you completed some vocabulary for this unit. 1.Mutation 2.Natural selection 3.Adaptation 4.Vestigial organs 5.Evolution 6.Speciation We went over the vocabulary and added notes to the vocabulary on page 52. In our notebook we added notes on Natural Selection and Adaptation on page 53. natural_selection_and_adaptation_notes.pptx Download File Next, as a simulation of natural selection, we went outside to hunt down some wacky mac. The purpose of the the simulation is to show how nature selects for a specific species. (WEATHER PENDING) The handout you received today, titled "Darwin's 5 Points of Natural Selection" is a review of the theories used to support Darwin. You can find this handout here if you lost it, it is due next class. The link has 2 pages, we are only doing page 1. darwinsfivepoints.pdf Download File Wacky Mac...what did nature select for??? Warm up today is on how humans are causing the next extinction. Clink on this link to open the article. Once you read the article, answer the questions from the board in your warm up folder. Next we organzied our notebooks for the new unit. New cover sheet(50), new table of contents(51)...our unit will be called EVOLUTION, ENERGY and ECOSYSTEMS. Our unit on evolution sometimes can be a bit controversial so to start the unit we go over the differences between Laws and Theories on the back of page 51. Evolution is a theory. For the new unit, we started off with some vocabulary. On page 52 in your notebook. Define the following words(use the textbook). You will have to use the glossary and/or the index. Please skip 2 lines between each word once you have defined them. 1.Mutation 2.Natural selection 3.Adaptation 4.Vestigial organs 5.Evolution 6.Speciation Next we watched some video clips on biological evolution through Discovery Education. DISCOVERY EDUCATION- make sure you log into Discovery Ed first through your student portal and then click the link below. You do not have to watch all of the clips, just the 6 listed below. Click here for video. Elements of Biology: Biological Evolution Watch the following and fill in the video guide. 1.Introduction to Charles Darwin 2.A new Understanding of Life 3.From the Big Bang to Early Life 4.The Evolution of Complex Organisms (questions 7-8) 5.The Proliferation of Species 6.The Evidence for the Theory of Evolution Attach the video guide to the back of page 52.
